I know, I know. It’s supposed to be spring cleaning. But I work at a university and the end of the year is a strategic time to acquire new things. I keep wondering when I’ll be grown-up enough to stop buying second hand furniture from students and 31 is definitely not the answer. Here’s my haul from this year:
First up we have this rug. After confirming with a student I work with closely that the owner had likely taken good care of it, I committed to purchase for $40. It’s an 8×10 so I am thrilled with the price. Right now it’s living in our “finished” basement (it still needs so much work) but I may try it out in Buddy’s room soon.
Next is this desk. For $65 I now have a place to store office supplies, work on craft projects, and pay bills without hogging our folding table 24/7. This also lives in our basement, where it is likely to stay.
Now we transition to the purchases from the university itself. Prior to major construction the business office hosts a one-day sale to recover whatever they can by selling everything pay as you will. This go around (the gym/athletic center) I snagged three items:
First we have this night stand. Yes, a nightstand from a gym. I know it’s weird, but it lived in one of the coaches offices. I paid $2. Yes, you read that right. It currently lives in Joel’s garage workshop waiting to be refinished.
Next up is the bench, also $2. It has some imperfections, like a small chunk of missing wood on the side. Joel is planning to refinish this piece as well to make it more weather proof. Our end goal is to have it live on the front porch, as you see above, so my thought is that the imperfections just add character. And for TWO DOLLARS?!?!? I’ll take it. Ignore the half dead bush you can see in the background. More landscaping is definitely on our list, but we seem to be moving at a turtle’s pace through it. I blame our full time jobs 🙂
My final purchase is actually a bit nostalgic. As an undergrad I was a cheerleader and have many happy memories of stunting on these mats. There was a set of 4 but I chose to take just one. EK is already loving it. You can check out my instagram (@davidsondays) for her incredible “flip” aka forward roll.
Finally, and my favorite addition to our home this spring, was a gift of art from a graduating student. “Mr. Ryan” interned with me for three summers, served in leadership under multiple programs I run and is EK’s hero because he once spent a solid two hours pretending to fly to Mars to go shopping with her. To have one of his creations in my home is so special.
How about you? Does your accumulation of household decor and furniture come in spurts or gradually over a long time? Typically I’m a slow and steady girl but when the deals are this good I just can’t pass them up.
